Brave Sufyaan, a five years old child, defeats by cancer
LITTLE Sufyaan Oostendorp has lost his battle with cancer. The five-year-old died on Monday, after his cancer had returned in January, making him no longer suitable for the bone medulla transplant he was to receive that month.“It is with great sadness that we announce Sufyaan Oostendorp has lost his battle to cancer. A hard battle fought by a brave little boy. He was a fighter and a true warrior,” his family said.
Sufyaan had inspired many to work together for a good cause through his pulsation, energetic spirit and sympathy, they said. The Cape Times reported last year that Sufyaan had been battling leukaemia and receiving treatment at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital. His mother Nuraan said Sufyaan went into remission in July 2013 after he had been diagnosed the previous month. But he had a relapse in March last year and they were told he needed a bone medulla transplant.A suitable donor was found in the US and the family had to raise R650 000 for the operation.
Generous Cape Times readers, Sufyaan’s family and friends raised about R85 000 towards his medical expenses and donor Solly Noor, of the Solly and Zohra Noor Foundation, offered to pay the balance after final tests were done to ensure an accurate donor match. The family was, however, told in January Sufyaan had relapsed again. “Sufyaan never complained about pain. If you asked him how he is, he would always say ‘Algamdulillah (Thanks be to Allah) with a smile’, although we could see that he was in pain. We have learnt from Sufyaan… to never give up and fight till the end,” the family said.
Noor said: “We are truly sad that we have lost Sufyaan. We wish his family all the energy in this difficult time.”
