TO EXPLAIN ‘MYSTERY TRIPS’ TO DUBAI, EFF WANTS GUPTA-LINKED MINISTERS
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has written to two Cabinet ministers reportedly linked to the politically well-connected Gupta family, asking them to officially explain their trips to Dubai. The third largest party in Parliament has sent questions to Cooeprative Governance Minister Des Van Rooyen and Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane about their ‘mystery trips’ in December last year.
The trips have raised eyebrows because the ministers were in Dubai at the same time as the Gupta family.Van Rooyen wouldn’t be drawn on exactly what he was doing in the United Arab Emirates during what he describes as a ‘private’ one-day trip on 20 December, less than two weeks after his four-day stint as minister of finance.
In a letter addressed to Van Rooyen, EFF Chief Whip Floyd Shivambu asks whether President Jacob Zuma and any member of the Gupta family were present in any of the meetings he attended in Dubai. In both letters, he reminds the ministers that misleading Parliament would be serious violation of their Constitutional duties.
allegation about the Gupta family’s sway over Zuma and his government have been circulating for some time. But the African National Congress (ANC) was forced to confront the allegations head-on when Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas revealed the Guptas’ had offered him the top post at Treasury shortly before Nhlanhla Nene was fired as finance minister in mid-December.
